A cute story of a CentOS migration project

• Recently, I had been tasked with job of helping a company with a farm of 200+ CentOS 5-7 virtual machines running on VMWare.
• As CentOS is nearing its end the task trickles down to which Linux OS to use going forward, and how to tidy up their current setup.
• Some of their other tools and technologies included: Spacewalk, Foreman, Puppet, as well as an integration with a larger and varied MS Windows server farm.

Research & Development

• Initially it was widely considered that the obvious choice of new Linux OS was Oracle Linux
  • Oracle Linux was an OS, which I had not spent time with. So on the first day – I installed Oracle Linux onto a Virtualbox VM
    • Enabled EPEL
    • Bascially had a good look under the hood.
    • Also I investigated the possiblity of carrying a direct conversion of CentOS to Oracle Linux

• During a call with one of the original Linux team members, it was asked – why use free when we can go enterprise as many companies prefer the option and benefit of having paid support to hand.

• Upon investigating Oracle Linux vs Red Hat on VMWare - RHEL became the better choice.
